2020 Southern Prize and State Fellowships Exhibition
Online Conversations with Burnaway
The 2020 Southern Prize and State Fellowships exhibition extended online with a series of conversations between the nine artists and Burnaway, the leading arts magazine celebrating art from the South. These lunchtime conversations—held between February and April 2021—explored each artist's work and what it means to be an artist who lives and works in the South. Each conversation was led by Erin Jane Nelson, executive director for Burnaway, and the winning artists. Attendees participated in a Q&A with the artists about their work.
South Arts recorded each interview between Burnaway and the 2020 Southern Prize & State Fellowship recipients.
April 12, 2021: Burnaway's Erin Nelson interviewed Sherrill Roland, 2020 Southern Prize winner and North Carolina Fellow.
March 25, 2021: Burnaway's Erin Nelson interviewed Karen Ocker (LA Fellow), Fahamu Pecou (GA Fellow), Kristi Ryba (SC Fellow), and Bill Steber (TN Fellow).
February 25, 2021: Burnaway's Erin Nelson interviewed Ashleigh Coleman (2020 Mississippi Fellow), Carlton Nell (2020 Southern Prize finalist and Alabama Fellow), Letitia Quesenberry (2020 Kentucky Fellow), and Alba Triana (2020 Florida Fellow).
These conversations are produced in partnership between South Arts and Burnaway. Burnaway is an Atlanta-based, artist-run organization with three core programs: a magazine of contemporary art and criticism; career training for aspiring arts writers and cultural journalists; and advocacy for artists and writers working in the southern United States. Since 2008, the organization has brought vital critical dialogue to one of the most politically polarized, historically fraught, ecologically threatened, and economically disadvantaged parts of the country. From Appalachia to Miami, Nashville to New Orleans, Burnaway both documents and participates in the vibrant cultural landscape of the region and continues to wonder, What is the South?
