Led by South Arts in partnership with a range of organizations across the region, this fund supports artists in need affected by Hurricane Helene and/or Milton. Artists living and working in FEMA-designated impacted areas (FL, GA, NC, SC, TN, and VA) are eligible.

The fund is split into two initiatives:

The Recovery Fund | Applications open March 19

Applications for this fund open on March 19, 2025. The Recovery Fund initiative provides $2,000 grants for individual artists to replace lost supplies and equipment because of the hurricanes. North Carolina based artists are now eligible for the Recovery Fund, in addition to artists from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Here is a brief timeline for interested applicants:

  • March 19, 2025 - Applications open
  • May 7, 2025 - Applications due
  • June 11, 2025 - Final awards distributed

The Relief Fund | APPLICATIONS CLOSED

Applications for this fund are closed. The Relief Fund initiative provided unrestricted $500 emergency grants to support artists and arts organizations in affected states. Final awards were distributed on March 1, 2025.

Recovery Fund Application Guidelines

Official Description

The Southern Arts Recovery Fund provides financial support to artists residing in the FEMA disaster areas of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia; impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Artists working in craft/traditional arts, design, literary, media/film, performing, visual, and interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary arts may apply for a grant to replace supplies and equipment lost due to the hurricanes. This opportunity is open to professional artists 18 years or older whose artistic practice generates any portion of their income. This recovery grant is for individual artists only.

Eligibility
  • Must currently reside in FEMA disaster areas in Florida (Helene), Florida (Milton), Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia.
  • Be 18 years of age or older and actively engaged in their artistic practice to generate any portion of their income.
  • Have active artistic practice in craft/traditional arts, design, literary, media/film, performing, visual, or interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary arts.
  • Have a quantifiable loss of equipment and/or supplies because of Hurricane Helene or Milton. 

Organizations and artists located outside of FEMA designated areas due to Hurricanes Helene and Milton are ineligible.

Review Criteria & Selection Process

South Arts will review all applications for the Southern Arts Relief and Recovery Fund to ensure that the applicant: 

  1. Is a verified resident of one of the FEMA designated areas impacted by Hurricane Helene or Milton.
  2. Has active and professional artistic practice.
  3. Has a quantifiable loss of equipment and/or supplies related to professional artistic practice as a result damage from Hurricane Helene or Milton. 

South Arts will select eligible applicants meeting the above criteria, using an internal process based on supporting FEMA designated areas. The review and selection process will occur throughout the month of May and South Arts will announce funding recommendations on June 11, 2025.  

Due to the volume of applications, we are unable to provide feedback.

Contracts & Payments

If South Arts selects your application for funding:  

  • You will receive an email with the Award Letter attached.
  • You must submit your signed Award Letter and upload the EFT Authorization Form as instructed. 
Use of Funds & Reporting Requirements

This grant supplements the replacement of supplies and musical instruments needed for artists to actively engage in their artistic practice. Repairs and cleanup of physical structures, including studio space, not allowed. Awardees will submit rreceipts of all expenses with their Final Report. 

Prohibited Use 

  • Debris removal and cleanup
  • Construction costs
  • Cosmetic work such as exterior and/or interior painting and furnishings
  • Repairs to and/or replacement of vehicles
  • Mortgage/Rent
  • Monthly utility expenses
  • Groceries
  • Health-related expenses

Eligible applicants must have primary residence in one of the FEMA designated disaster areas.

For the purposes of this grant, we define residency as the place you inhabit most and where you will file taxes. 

Applicants must upload a valid driver’s license or government ID, a W-9, and one of the following additional documents with the address consistent amongst all documents: 

  • Automobile registration or insurance
  • Voter registration card
  • Utility bill dated within 30 days of the application process.

Artistic Practice 

Artistic Practice Description – Artist Statement: Briefly tell us about what kind of artist/ arts professional/ arts business you are (i.e., painter, musician, etc.) and a brief description of your work. (500 Character limit including spaces.) 

Artistic Category: Which option best describes your artistic medium. 

  • Craft: ceramics, glass, fiber, metal, or wood
  • Folk/Traditional: music, literature, storytelling
  • Design: graphic design, fashion design, interior design
  • Literary: writing, journalism
  • Media: graphic and web design, radio, television, film
  • Performing: theatre, dance, music, and other types of performance
  • Visual: painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media
  • Interdisciplinary: has a significant presence in more than one of the arts mediums 

Website or Social Media Links: Share a publicly accessible website that demonstrates your artistic work. If you do not have a website, you may instead share your work with a link: Website hosted by another entity that displays your art; Your public Instagram or Facebook page; Media platform like Vimeo or YouTube. (Required) 

Resume or CV: Upload your resume or CV, including exhibits/performances within the last 12-18 months. (Required) 

Promotional Materials: Upload promotional materials that are representative of your active artistic practice. Examples include flyer, brochure, program, news article dated within the last 12-18 months. (Required)
