This project will support a four-week residency scheduled throughout the period between July 15 and September 15, 2023. Partnering with the TSU School of Communication, Dr. Neuman will use its production facilities to produce original music combining contemporary jazz, hip hop, interactive electronics, and folk music. Dr Neuman will collaborator with artists, musicians from TSU and the Houston Third Ward community. Internship positions will be offered to TSU students. The music will be publicly presented on the TSU campus.
About the Artist
Dr. Israel Neuman is a composer, producer, sound engineer, bass player, and educator. He teaches sound production at the Texas Southern University School of Communication. Neuman’s sound projects are diverse both in content as well as in their uses of technology. He recorded, mixed, and mastered for jazz artists such as John Rapson, Damani Phillip, Lewis Nash, Jim Buennig, and James Dreier. He collaborated as sound designer and composer with filmmakers Tyrone Dixon and Yuval Cohan as well as playwright Thomas Meloncon. He served as technical director and live sound engineer in venues throughout the Midwest. Neuman’s research projects explore conceptual and practical aspects of real-time composition and computer improvisation, using various methods of classification and machine learning, as well as generative grammars derived from Schaefferian theory.
Neuman received his Ph.D. in composition, M.A. in jazz studies and Master of Computer Science at the University of Iowa, as well as a B.Mus. in jazz studies at the University of Hartford. He studied composition with Lawrence Fritts, John Eaton, David Gompper, and John Rapson. He studied bass with Gary Karr, Michael Klinghoffer, Diana Gannett, Volkan Orhon, Nat Reeves, and Anthony Cox. Neuman’s paper “Generative Grammars for Interactive Composition Based on Schaeffer’s TARTYP” received the ICMC 2013 Best Paper Award. His composition Turnarounds received awards from the International Horn Society and the Society of Composers Inc. and was released on Navona Records. His scholarly work was published in the Computer Music Journal, SEAMUS Journal and the proceedings of SMC 2022 and 2018, ICMC 2015, 2014, and 2013. His creative work was presented at SMC 2018, 2020, 2018, 2017, 2012 and 2010 SEAMUS National Conferences, 2011 STUDIO 300 Digital Art and Music Festival and 2008 Electronic Music Midwest Festival.
