David Detweiler is a distinguished post-bop soloist, tenor saxophonist, composer, and educator, recognized for his superior musicianship. While influenced by early John Coltrane and Michael Brecker, Detweiler has crafted a distinct sound and style within the mainstream of modern jazz.
Having earned his DMA degree from the Eastman School of Music in 2015 and his MM degree from Florida State University in 2010, Detweiler's musical journey also included studies at the University of North Texas and William Paterson University. He received his BM degree from William Paterson, studying under esteemed teachers such as Ramon Ricker, Charles Pillow, Bill Kennedy, Gary Smulyan, and Steve Wilson.
Currently serving as the Assistant Professor of Jazz Saxophone, Detweiler joined the faculty at Florida State University in 2016 after directing Jazz Studies at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. His performance venues include some of New York City’s premier live-music spots like The Blue Note, Birdland, The Knitting Factory, and The Iridium.
Detweiler's discography as a leader includes "New York Stories," featuring Leon Anderson, Clarence Seay, Chris Pattishall, and Rick Lollar. His second album, "The Dave Detweiler Trio," was released in August 2015. Notable subsequent releases include "Celebrating Bird" with bassist Fumi Tomita in September 2020 and "The Astoria Suite" in 2021.
Beyond his performance career, Detweiler has presented research and performed at various conferences, including the Jazz Education Network (JEN), the College Music Society (CMS), and the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA). Recognized as a P. Mauriat and Vandoren artist, David Detweiler continues to contribute significantly to the world of jazz through his artistry and educational endeavors.
