About the Artist
Tide Pools is Hannah Marks (bass), Connor Parks (drums), and Alfredo Colon (alto saxophone). Along with their self-penned compositions, the trio’s repertoire reflects a diversity of influences from an Appalachian folk tune to songs by free jazz pioneers Ornette Coleman and Paul Motian to a jingle from a Dominican rum commercial. Water is a running theme throughout the group, as evidenced by the churning swirl of an “anti-soloist” agenda and their free-flowing musical leader roles.
Hannah Marks is a bassist, bandleader, composer, and educator living in New York City. As a bandleader, she has performed at several major festivals, including the Detroit Jazz Festival, Hyde Park Jazz Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival, and Indy Jazz Festival. She is a member of Morgan Guerin’s quartet and Kristen Lee Seargent’s band, as well as a frequent sideman with Geoffrey Keezer, Ingrid Jensen, Marcus Printup and Ted Nash. Her former project, Heartland Trio, released their debut album in November 2018. Marks is a 2019 alumnus of Betty Carter Jazz Ahead, a 2018 alumnus of the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music, and a 2014 alumnus of the Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony. She is on faculty at The Spence School and runs her own private lesson studio. She is a frequent performer at The Jazz Gallery in NYC and was commissioned twice by the venue to write original music for their “Lockdown Sessions” series during the pandemic.
Connor Parks is from Orlando, FL, where he began studying drums & percussion with Beth and Danny Gottlieb. Connor received a BFA in Jazz Studies from the New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music in New York City, where he was instructed by Jane Ira Bloom, Reggie Workman, and Dave Douglas, and privately studied with Matt Wilson, Johnathan Blake, Aaron Parks, Matt Brewer, Harish Raghavan, Amir Ziv, Ben Street, Gilad Hekselman, and Dayna Stephens. Upon arriving in New York City, Connor has performed with Rodney Jones, Vic Juris, Linda Briceño, Dave Glasser, JD Allen, Ingrid Jensen, Aaron Parks, Mcklopedia, and Kandace Springs, among many others. As a composer, Connor has written music for ensembles ranging from solo performers to nonets with strings. He has collaborated with Cameron McKinney (Kizuna Dance) & the Joffrey School of Ballet. He is an endorsee of Innovative Percussion sticks & mallets, Canopus Drums and Paiste Cymbals.
