About the Artist
The Afro-Peruvian Sextet was established in 2005. The ensemble’s inventive program of traditional Afro-Peruvian music is further transformed by Alegría’s synthesis of folkloric Afro-Peruvian rhythms, jazz, and other musical strains.
With more than 15 years on the road together, each member of the Sextet is not only a master musician but also a dedicated and experienced educator. The band has produced seven CDs, one documentary film and one vinyl record to date.
The band is comprised of: Gabriel Alegria, trumpet; Laura Andrea Leguia, saxophones; Ariacne Trujillo, piano & vocals; John Benitez, double bass; Freddy "Huevito" Lobaton, cajon, cajita & quijada; and Shirazette Tinnin, drums.
The most recent touring history includes The Veil Concert Series, The Gund Concert series and workshops at Indiana University, DePauw University, Denison University and Kenyon College as well as clubs and smaller jazz societies and presenters.
