About the Artist
Eugene Chadbourne (Jan. 4, 1954, Mt. Vernon New York). Guitarist, banjoist and vocalist Eugene Chadbourne grew up in Boulder, Colorado during the 60s where he joined his first teenage garage bands in 1969. His earliest influences included psychedelic music, country blues and local avant-garde composers George Crumb and Todd Dockstader. A few years later his parents relocated to Calgary, Alberta in order to protect Eugene in particular from the military draft. He took up music full time with the release of his first album of solo guitar music in 1975 and with encouragement from mentor Anthony Braxton returned to the United States, establishing a base in Manhattan and collaborations with John Zorn and Toshinori Kondo. Another, so far final move to North Carolina took place in the early 80s. Chadbourne has organized many diverse ensembles since that time blending country and western with free improvisation, continuing to record prolifically. His work is the subject of a special collection in the UNC Music of North Carolina archive.
